Dr. Harrison Schmitt, a former astronaut and U.S. Senator, visited Malta April 22-26 as part of the U.S. Embassy’s international speaker program. During his visit, Dr. Schmitt visited local schools, delivered lectures at the University of Malta, and spoke at the Malta Aviation Museum.
Dr. Schmitt’s presentations at the University, titled “A Scientist on the Moon: Apollo 17” and “Space Exploration and Exploitation” were attended by a diverse group of students, scientists and members of the public. While at the University, Dr. Schmitt also met with Professor Robert M. Borg, who represented Malta at the 1972 “International Youth Science Tour” organized by NASA to mark the last expedition to the moon. While at the Manned Spacecraft Center, Borg, who is now Associate Professor of Chemistry in the Faculty of Science at the University of Malta, watched a live transmission of a moonwalk by Dr. Schmitt and fellow astronaut Eugene Cernan.
Dr. Schmitt will discuss his experience as an astronaut on an upcoming edition of the popular TV program “Xarabank.”
