The American Embassy, Valletta, Malta assumes no responsibility for the professional ability or reputation of the persons or facilities whose names appear on the following list. Those listed have expressed a desire to assist members of the American community.
The order in which the physicians are listed has no significance. All are English-speaking. Many hold postgraduate qualifications from United Kingdom universities. Individuals requesting services may wish to review physician credentials when booking appointments.
St. Luke's Hospital, a Government administered facility, serves as Malta's primary medical facility. It has an intensive care unit and emergency equipment. Gozo is served by a smaller Government facility, Craig Hospital. A number of Government health clinics located in villages and towns provide first aid. Several private hospitals also provide medical services and surgical facilities.
The Foreign Patients Regulations of 1989 lays down the following hospital fees:
The fee which may be charged for the care and treatment of in-patients or inmates in any hospital or other institution of the Department of Health shall be Lm 85.00 per day, while the fee for recovery at an intensive care unit shall be Lm 300 per day, and in a high dependency care unit the fee shall be Lm 150 per day.
The above specified fee is not inclusive of any surgical operation or of any extraordinary medical examination which may be carried out on the patient.
The fee which may be charged for a surgical operation shall be:
(a) for a minor operation under local anaesthesia - Lm 85.00
(b) for a minor operation under general anaesthesia - Lm 165.00
(c) for an intermediate operation - Lm 350.00
(d) for a major operation - Lm 750.00
(e) for specialized surgery including major neurosurgical operations, transplantation of organs other than skin and cornea, open heart surgery, major vascular surgery and major plastic surgery - Lm 2250
The cost of any prosthesis or implant shall be charged in addition to the relative operation fee.
The fee for for the following investigations, procedures, shall be:
(a) CT Scan - Lm 150
(b) Gamma Scan - Lm 200
(c) Cardio angiography - Lm 300
(d) Peripheral arteriography - Lm 150
(e) MRI - Lm 300
(f) Cardioangioplasty - Lm 1200
(g) For each stent - Lm 400
(h) For nomal pacemaked and leads - Lm 1400
(i) For a dual chamber pacemaker (exclusive of leads) - Lm 3000
Any other extraordinary medical investigation procedure shall be charged at cost.
These fees do not apply to Maltese migrants who were or still are Maltese citizens: they are entitled to free medical services.
