Embassy Sections


Consular Section
The Consular Section protects the interests of American citizens who travel or reside in Malta and processes applications for visas to travel to the United States from citizens of Malta and other countries.  Services for American citizens include passports, reports of birth, notarial services, and assistance in arrests, deaths, and other cases involving Americans.

Commercial Section
The Commercial Section promotes the export to Malta of American products and services and supports the interests of U.S. firms operating in Malta.  Commercial Section’ staff can help firms that sell U.S. products or services identify trade opportunities, find local trading partners, launch a company, and obtain market research reports. 

Political  and Economic Section
The Political and Economic Section follows, analyzes and reports political and  developments in Malta, and generates support for U.S. policy objectives with key Maltese leaders.

Management
The Management Section is responsible for financial affairs, communications, facilities maintenance, procurement and contracting, and human resources.  The majority of contacts with the Maltese public occur in the procurement and contracting functions.  The U.S. Embassy, Malta purchases hundreds of thousands of euro in supplies and services each year – much of it from the local business community.  Persons interested in doing business with the U.S. Embassy should refer to our Business Opportunities section of this web site for postings on services and supplies wanted.  If your company wishes to submit a tender, please follow the directions posted in each announcement.  Winning tenders will be announced in our Notice of Award section of the web site.  The human resources section hires embassy employees as vacancies occur.  Please check the Vacancy Announcements for job opportunities open to the general public. The General Services Office has various items requiring disposal during the year because the items have been replaced or are no longer needed.  These items will be advertised in the Items for Sale area and are always sold in an “As Is” condition with no warranties implied.  See each announcement for the terms of the sale.

Public Affairs
The mission of the Public Affairs Section is to promote understanding of U.S. political, economic and social issues -- explaining to Maltese audiences both the U.S. government's foreign policy and American society and culture.  Public Affairs responsibilities include Media Relations, which handles media inquiries on U.S. policy and Embassy activities, Exchanges and Programs, which organizes travel by Maltese to America, and American visitors to Malta, to promote deeper understanding of American values and beliefs, and the Information Resource Center (IRC) provides authoritative, relevant, and timely background on both the content and context of U.S. policy issues.

Regional Security Office (RSO)
The Regional Security Office assures adequate protection of Embassy personnel and facilities and is the primary liaison with Maltese law enforcement officials.  The Office also coordinates with other American interests, such as schools and businesses, on security matters.  The Regional Security Officer is a Special Agent of the State Department’s Bureau of Diplomatic Security

The Defense Attache's Office (USDAO)
The United States Defense Attaché Office (USDAO) performs representational functions to the Government and Armed Forces of Malta on behalf of the Secretary of Defense, the Secretaries of the Military Services, the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the Chiefs of the U.S. Military Services and the Commander of United States European Command. The office is also responsible for assisting the Armed Forces of Malta in acquiring training and equipment from official U.S. sources. The Defense Attaché at the American Embassy, Valletta is Commander Jane Moraski, United States Navy.

Marine Corps Security Guards
The United States Marine Corps Security Guards control access to the Embassy and  personnel, facilities and sensitive material.

Export Control and Border Security Program (EXBS)
This section manages an extensive U.S. government program of cooperation with the Maltese Customs Department and other authorities designed to enhance Malta's capability to control goods passing through Malta's ports.  Under this program, the United States has donated sophisticated detection devices for Customs use at the Malta Freeport, trained Maltese Customs officers in detection techniques and donated a chemical/biological hazard control equipment to the Civil Protection Department. among other activities.
