On Wednesday, June 10, a group of six students graduated from the latest training program held at the Armed Forces of Malta’s Search and Rescue (SAR) Training Center, located at Safi Barracks. The students in the course came from Malta, Cote d’Ivoire, and Liberia.
The AFM’s Search and Rescue Training Center is modeled on the United States Coast Guard’s own SAR School, which is widely regarded as the world’s premier source for SAR training. U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) methodology and International Aeronautical and Maritime SAR Manual standards shape the training programs.
Funding for the training is provided by the U.S., and to date more than 60 students, from African, Middle Eastern, and European countries, have been fully trained at the center. More than 80 AFM personnel, some of whom now maintain a constant SAR watch at the AFM Rescue Coordination Center, have also been trained at the center.
