Mr. Robert Moore, Associate Division Director for Texas A&M University/TEEX, is currently in Malta to expand collaboration with ISTC (International Safety Training Centre Ltd), a subsidiary of the Malta based Alberta Fire, Safety and Security Group. Since last year, Texas A&M/TEEX has been using ISTC’s facilities in Hal-Far as a cooperative learning center for the provision of industrial fire fighting, safety and security training to oil and gas companies with operations in the North African region. One of the main topics for discussion during Mr. Moore’s visit will be the relocation to ISTC - Malta of Mr. Mark Jackson, a Certified Fire Protection Specialist who is currently the international training coordinator for Texas A&M University/TEEX. Mr. Jackson will provide advanced training to ISTC’s instructors so that they can be certified to deliver highly specialized fire and safety courses that are accredited to internationally recognized NFPA (National Fire Prevention Association – US) standards. Mr. Jackson will also assist ISTC’s marketing team as a technical consultant for training programs to the North African oil and gas sector. For the past year, ISTC and Texas A&M University/TEEX have actively cooperated on the development of a training program tailored specifically to the requirements of the region. Currently ISTC provides training for Wintershall Oil – Libya (part of the multinational BASF Group) in fire fighting, security and specialized driving. ISTC also trains personnel from Malta’s Water Services Corporation in the use of breathing apparatus, hazardous gas detection, working safely in confined spaces, and lift truck operation.
Mr. Jason Davis, Chargé d’Affaires of the U.S. Embassy, said he was delighted that Texas A&M University/TEEX was expanding its operations in Malta. “The successful collaboration between Texas A&M University and ISTC is a success story, and will help ensure top quality training in fire-safety and security not only for Malta but also for the entire North African region,” he added.
